3 Things we learnt from Chelsea 5-3 Salzburg

  1. Defence needs sorting

Wednesday night saw another victory for Frank Lampards blues, however another 3 goals were shipped in the process. David Luiz and Kurt Zouma started the match with Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen being brought on after the 60 minute mark. Both combinations saw errors and goals conceded and it may worry the coach with the season just a week away. Antonio Rüdiger is still to come back, arguably being the blues main centre back, however with Luiz and Zouma being the preferred partnership they will need to form an understanding quickly to help with the issue.

2. Christian Pulisic

The American international made his first statement for his new club as he bagged two goals in an electric 10 minute spell, where he also won a penalty. Cutting in from the left to score, create and dribble saw Chelsea fans purring at the thought of a like for like Eden Hazard replacement. Obviously Pulisic has a marathon to go to get to Hazards levels and he may never get close, however he is sure to add an extra dimension to Chelsea’s attack next season.

3. Ross Barkley under Frank Lampard is exciting

Ross Barkley has been Chelsea’s stand out performer so far in pre-season and his performance in Austria continued to show his improvements thus far. Playing in the number 10 role has allowed Ross to become free again and is showing the creativity and movement that made him so promising at Everton. This could really be the season where he makes his claim to be a permanent Chelsea and England starter.
